Dry Eyes – Symptoms and Causes

Medication

Some medications cause dry eye [8] symptoms. This usually happens with drugs that alter mucus production in your body. Your tears are made up of oil, mucus, and water, so when mucus production is altered, you may produce tears of lower quality.

Medications that often contribute to dry eyes include decongestants, diuretics, antidepressants, antihistamines for allergies, beta-blockers used for hypertension, hormone replacement therapy and drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Not everyone who uses these drugs will suffer from dry eyes. If you happen to, see a doctor.

Your doctor may recommend different medications that do not affect your eyes in this way or prescribe artificial tears to lubricate your eyes.
