Preventive measures for corneal abrasion

  • Wearing proper safety gear when playing sports or working on the farm or construction sites. Without wearing the proper eye gear dust and sand particles can enter the eye, wearing proper eye gear with proper fit is also very important to avoid dust or dirt particles from coming into the eye.
  • Trimming of fingernails. Keeping long fingers can be a major cause of corneal abrasion. It is therefore advised to trim your fingernails regularly to avoid causing harm to the eyes.
  • Always wash your hands before wearing contact lenses. Using dirty hands to put on a contact lens can expose the eyes to foreign materials and even germs. It is also important to note that contact lenses should be changed every 3 months to avoid eye infections.
  • Make sure to go for eye checkups at least once a year. The symptoms of some eye conditions do not appear immediately but until it gets to the late stages. That is why it is important to visit the doctor for a proper checkup. The sooner the eye conditions are detected, the easier to treat them and the better.
