Keratitis: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Types of keratitis

Depending on what causes it, keratitis can be divided into two primary categories. Either infectious or noninfectious keratitis can exist.

Infection keratitis

One of the following causes of infectious keratitis is:

Fungi: Aspergillus, Candida, or Fusarium are the three fungi that can cause keratitis. Fungal keratitis is more likely to harm contact lens wearers than bacterial keratitis. But it’s also possible to come into contact with these fungi outside.

Bacteria: The two most prevalent forms of bacteria that cause bacterial keratitis are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Most frequently, it appears in those who misuse contacts.

Parasites: An organism called Acanthamoeba has become more common in the United States in those who wear contact lenses. It is an outdoor parasite and tends to be picked up by swimming in a lake, walking in a wooded area, or getting infected water on your contact lenses. This type of infection is called Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Viruses: Viral keratitis is primarily caused by the herpes simplex virus, which progresses from conjunctivitis to keratitis.
