9 Signs of Thrombocytopenia (Low Blood Platelets)

Easy bruising (purpura)

One of the signs of thrombocytopenia is the appearance of bruises on the skin. The bruises appear on their own and are not the result of trauma or physical contact with any surface. The bruises are usually the result of subcutaneous bleeding observable as red blotches on the skin. This condition, also called purpura, occurs when blood vessels under the skin leak blood. On light skins, the blotches may appear purple or blue but may eventually turn green or yellow.

Purpura [2] happens in other areas apart from the skin, such as in the surface of internal organs and on the mucus membranes. Sometimes these spots are observable on the membranes of the mouth. Purpura is caused or aggravated by medications that prevent platelets in the blood from clotting.
