Skin Rashes and Sores

Around 90 percent [7] of HIV-positive people will develop a skin condition at some point. These skin problems can take many forms. They usually show up during the first and third stages of HIV infection.

The appearance of rashes on the skin is a common symptom of HIV that may show up in its primary stages. Many rash types are associated with HIV infections. It is not always clear if the rashes are caused by HIV itself or by comorbidities. The only way to tell for sure is to check with a healthcare practitioner. Rashes caused by HIV are red and usually don’t itch [8]. They typically concentrate around the torso.

Other dermal problems associated with HIV include skin sores, ulcers, or lesions that may affect the genitals, anus, and the area around the mouth. Mouth sores are a common symptom of HIV, affecting around 32 to 46 percent [9] of HIV-positive people. The sores develop because the immune system has deteriorated. HIV mouth sores are often difficult to treat.
