Meal Plans for Diarrhea Type of IBS

During an IBS attack or flare-up, certain foods can help soothe the gut and reduce symptoms. The foods may differ depending on the type of symptoms the person is experiencing. For diarrhea attack in people suffering from IBS, this meal plan [4] can be very helpful;

  • Breakfast option: oatmeal without sugar or sweeteners.
  • Lunch option: grilled fish and baked sweet potato. The grilled fish can also be baked or replaced with grilled chicken. Spices should be minimal, and the irritating spices should be avoided entirely.
  • Dinner option: spinach salad with grilled chicken or any other lean protein.

NB: while preparing the grilled chicken or fish, butter and oil shouldn’t be used. Other foods in the same class can be used to replace the foods in this meal plan.

For snacking, a protein bar or shake can be taken. It is important to stay away from foods with high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners and other known gut irritants that may cause diarrhea or worsen diarrhea. It is highly recommended to take in a lot of fluid as well. Electrolyte replacement drinks like Hydralyte are highly recommended to replace electrolytes lost through diarrhea.
