6 Major Causes of Schizophrenia

Genetic Inheritance

The chances of developing schizophrenia if there has been no history of the family’s condition is less than one percent. Note that a particular individual’s risk may increase if a parent or family member is diagnosed with the condition.

Generally, the inheritance pattern of schizophrenia is unknown, but family history with the condition remains a significant risk factor. According to a 2017 study, it is estimated that the heritability of schizophrenia is at 79 percent. Note that the research was based on 30,000 twins.

The same 2017 study concluded that the vulnerability for schizophrenia isn’t based on genetic factors based on the risk of 33 percent for identical twins. Genetic inheritance may be a significant risk of schizophrenia, but Genetic Home Reference states that most individuals with close relatives will not develop schizophrenia themselves.
