Pain After Dental Implants: What’s Normal?

Pain after a dental implant

After the surgery, you may feel some pain or discomfort, this is normal since you just had a new tooth put in your gum, but the pain shouldn’t prolong for more than a few days.

You may start to feel the pain when the local anesthesia wears off. The pain will usually occur around the area you had the dental implant.

Asides from pain, you may also experience some other effects of the surgery, such as:

  • Bleeding at the site you had the surgery
  • Slight bruising
  • Swelling on the gums or face
  • Pain in the jaw

To manage your pain and ensure they don’t result in more complications, your oral surgeon will instruct you on some post-procedure care, such as:

  • Some over-the-counter pain medication
  • Placing an ice pack on the area to reduce swelling
  • Avoid hard and hot food as it can worsen the pain
  • Rest more often and avoid stress till you feel better
  • Instructions on how to care for the surgical site
