Sepsis Stages and Symptoms

Septic Shock

Septic shock [9] symptoms are identical to those of severe sepsis, but include a substantial decrease in blood pressure as well. This decrease in blood pressure can result in heart failure, stroke, other organ failure, respiratory failure, and even death. Researchers [10] conclude that the inflammation arising from sepsis in the body usually causes small blood clots to form which prevents oxygen and nutrients from getting to the body tissues, causing impaired organ function or failure.

The worsening happens with circulatory failure (refractory hypotension), with obstruction of the vessels, making the application of serum or any other medication unviable. When the patient reaches this stage, there is no other outcome than death.

Most classification of the stages of sepsis often include only three stages;

      • SIRS
      • Severe sepsis, and
      • Septic shock
