Infective Endocarditis

Staph bacteria are the major cause of infective endocarditis. Infective endocarditis is the infection of the inner surface of the heart, especially the heart valves. It is also commonly known as Bacterial endocarditis.

Staphylococcal endocarditis occurs when the staph bacteria gain entry into the bloodstream and migrates to the heart to colonize different parts of the heart, especially the heart valves. Risk factors for staph endocarditis include: damage to the heart valves, valvular heart diseases, presence of artificial valves, intravenous drug use, congenital heart disease and so on.

The common signs and symptoms of staph endocarditis include;

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Persistent cough
  • Small areas of bleeding breaking out on the skin
  • Anemia
  • Abnormal heart sounds, heart murmurs, etc

Infective endocarditis can lead to severe complications if left untreated. Some possible complications include: heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and many other complications.
