What Causes Strep Throat?

Contact with carriers

The most common mode of transmission of strep throat is close contact with an infected person. If one person has strep throat in a household, it’s very likely other members of the house will contract it within a short time.

The flu and most throat infections are transmitted through droplets carried in the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Strep throat is transmitted in the same way. Strep throat can also be contracted by touching the sores on the skin of people with strep A infections such as impetigo [5].

Infections illnesses tend to spread faster in crowded places. To reduce the risk of infection it’s best to be cautious when in potential hotspots, especially during flu season. These places include schools, military facilities, and daycares.
