What Causes Strep Throat?

Age

You’re at more risk of contracting strep throat if you’re young. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention [2], strep throat is responsible for 30 percent of sore throats in children. Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15 [3]. Strep throat infections are rare in children below 3 years.

Compared to children, only 1 in 10 adults with a sore throat has strep throat. Some adults are also at a greater risk of contracting strep throat than others.

Time of the year

Strep throat can be contracted at any time of the year. Like the flu, the chances of getting it peaks at certain times of the year.

Winter and early spring [4] are the seasons when strep transmission is most likely to occur. During these seasons, the immune system tends to be weaker, increasing susceptibility to disease.
