What Causes Strep Throat?

Complications

Strep throat can lead to very serious complications if it’s not treated on time. The bacteria may spread from the throat into the middle ear, sinuses, skin, or blood. This can have very debilitating consequences on the health of an infected person.

It may also develop into kidney inflammation or scarlet fever. Rheumatic fever [6] is probably the most serious of these complications. It usually develops between 1 to 5 weeks after infection. This fever develops as a result of an inflammatory immune response and is not contagious. It is characterized by fever, joint pain, shortness of breath, and involuntary jerking of the body. The condition can result in heart enlargement, fluid collection around the heart, or the development of heart murmurs.
