Hysterectomy: Purpose, Procedure, Benefits, Risks, and Recovery

Types of hysterectomy

It is important to speak with your doctor to know which type of hysterectomy is best for your condition. In most cases, the type of procedure you undergo depends on the effect of your condition on neighboring organs, such as ovaries and fallopian tubes.

  • Radical hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy: This type involves removing the superior part of the vagina, the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the cervix, and the uterus. It also involves removing lymph nodes and tissues around the uterus. It is usually recommended for people with cancer.
  • Salpingo-oophorectomy: This type involves removing the ovaries (oophorectomy), fallopian tubes [1] (salpingectomy), cervix, and uterus. For people who have not had menopause, removal of the ovaries will result in some menopausal signs.
  • Total hysterectomy: This type of procedure involves removing the cervix and uterus but not the ovaries.
  • Supracervical hysterectomy: The superior portion of the uterus is removed and the cervix is left alone.
