Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Causes of PMDD

The exact cause of this disorder is still unclear. Research shows that the decreasing level of estrogen and progesterone after ovulation and menstruation may be a cause of PMDD. Also, the abnormal amount of a brain chemical called serotonin which controls sleep, hunger, and regulates mood may affect.

Women’s abnormal response to normal hormones during the monthly flow may cause deficiency of this chemical or neurotransmitter serotonin [2] and in turn cause this disorder. Another factor that may serve as a cause is a family history of postpartum depression, mood disorders, and depression.
