How do I prepare for a wet mount?

It is important to avoid douching for 24 hours before your appointment with your doctor. In some cases, your doctor will ask you to stay away from sex or use a tampon for 24 hours before the test.
How is the wet mount performed?
You will be asked to lie down on an exam table with your feet in stirrups, like at a normal gynecological exam. They’ll put a speculum into the vagina to help observe the area. A sterile cotton swab is placed into the vagina to get a sample of vaginal discharge.
You may feel discomfort or pressure, but the test doesn’t cause pain.
The doctor will put the sample of discharge in a slide. The slide is examined under a microscope to see if there is any infection.
