5 Common Symptoms of Tetanus(Lockjaw)

Difficulty Swallowing

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing or the inability to do so. If you have dysphagia, you may choke on your food or drink while trying to eat them. Swallowing difficulty is not always caused by underlying medical conditions, but sometimes it is.

If you have a tetanus infection, you are likely to experience difficulty in swallowing. This usually starts sometime after the initial symptoms. This is often due to the stiffness and limited flexibility that spreads to the neck muscles from the jaw. It limits the extent to which the esophagus can expand to accommodate food transport.

While difficulty swallowing food is a symptom of lockjaw, you should be aware that there are many other causes. Experiencing this symptom is not proof of tetanus infection. You should speak to your doctor first as only a small pool of dysphagia cases [4] are caused by tetanus infections.
