How Much Water Should a Toddler Drink?

Why Is Water Essential for Kids Older Than One?

According to pediatric dietitian Grace Shea, MS, RDN, CSP, LDN [1], “water should be the main source of hydration for kids over the age of 1,” and there are a number of reasons why.

For starters, drinking plenty of water helps kids’ digestion, preventing those uncomfortable constipation problems no one wants to deal with. Additionally, while your child runs, wrestles, and rolls, they need water to rehydrate after exercise (especially if playing outdoors or in the hotter months).

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [2] has confirmed that drinking water preserves tissues, lubricates joints, and helps people of all ages maintain a constant body temperature. And since it has no calories and no sugar and won’t change your toddler’s taste buds, it’s pretty much a complete win.
