What is Spina Bifida?

Myelomeningocele

Myelomeningocele is the most popular and serious type of spina bifida. It is characterized by a sack outside the opening in the baby’s back somewhere on the spine. The sack may contain different parts of the spinal cord and nerves. The parts of the nerves and spinal cord in the sac will be damaged. People with this type of spina bifida experience physical disabilities that range from mild to severe. These physical abilities may include:

  • Incontinence
  • Difficulty going to the bathroom
  • Inability to move or feel their legs or feet
