What are the symptoms of spina bifida?

Each type of spina bifida has its unique symptoms. Symptoms may also be different in individuals who have the same type. Identifying symptoms of the condition early plays a significant role in treating the condition.

Myelomeningocele

You may experience the following symptoms if you have myelomeningocele spina bifida:

  • Membranes and spinal cord pushed outside the back in an exposed or skin-covered sack
  • Open spinal canal over some vertebrae, usually in the middle or lower part of the back
  • Deformed feet
  • Hips that are not even
  • Scoliosis (curved spine) [1]
  • Weak or paralyzed leg muscles [2]
  • Seizures [3]
  • Issues with the bowel and bladder
