Breast Implants: Types, Surgery, Recovery & More

Procedure for Breast Implant Treatment

You are put to sleep (sedated) before getting breast implants so that you won’t be awake and won’t experience any pain.

In order to make the scars from breast implants less obvious, an incision (cut) is performed while you are asleep in one of four private locations of your body. The various cuts include:

  • Periareolar: An incision made along the outside of the areola, the pigmented region that encircles your nipple.
  • An incision in the crease that runs from your chest to the bottom of your breast.
  • A transaxillary, which is cut in your armpit.
  • A belly button incision known as the transumbilical.

For each form of incision, there are benefits and drawbacks. The ideal type of incision should be discussed with your healthcare professional.

Your surgeon will then put the breast implant through the incision. Placing it either underneath or between your breast tissue and chest muscles.
