High Potassium Foods to Avoid

In sticking to a low potassium diet, you’ll find that knowing the foods to avoid is often as critical as knowing which ones to eat. Most foods are high in potassium, so the list of foods to avoid can seem daunting. This shouldn’t bother you. Just be mindful of those you’re likely to eat in large quantities and channel your efforts into eating low potassium foods.

Except where differentiated, the following foods are high in potassium at ½ cup, according to the National Kidney Foundation [5].

Fruits

Raw apricot (2 medium), dried apricot (5 halves), avocado (¼ whole), cantaloupe, dates (5 whole), dried figs, honeydew, kiwifruit (1 medium), orange (1 medium), orange juice, pomegranate (1 whole), pomegranate juice, banana (½ whole) , papaya (½ whole), prunes, raisins, grapefruit juice, prune juice, mango (1 medium)nectarine (1 medium).

Vegetables

Okra, acorn squash, artichoke, bamboo shoots, cooked broccoli, refried beans, black beans, baked beans, brussels sprouts, chinese cabbage, raw carrots, lentils, cooked white mushrooms, cooked spinach, parsnips, dried beans, dried peas, butternut squash, kohlrabi, rutabagas, tomato, tomato juice, boiled beets, pumpkin.

Other high potassium foods

Granola, chocolates (1.5 to 2 ounces), all types of milk (1 cup), bran and bran products, yogurt, nuts and seeds (1 ounce), peanut butter (2 tablespoons), salt-free broth, tobacco, molasses (1 tablespoon), salt substitutes.
