Understanding Extra Help Medicare

How to apply for Extra Help

The process to apply for Medicare Extra Help is quite easy. You are to fill in the Medicare Extra Help application (Form SSA-1020). This can be done online or at any local Social Security office. If you are sending your application through mail, ensure that you use an original form and not a photocopy. It is also possible to apply over the phone; you can simply call the Social Security Administration number.

Your application will be reviewed by Social Security and you will be informed if you are eligible. You can then proceed to choose a Medicare prescription drug plan. The easiest way to do this is to visit www.medicare.gov [4] or you will automatically be assigned one by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Here’s a guide to completing your application:

  • You do not have to list public acceptance, interest or dividends from investment, and foster care payment on your form
  • You don’t have to give the government access to your bank account
  • It might help to list children or grandchildren that live with you on your application
  • You don’t have to submit a document proving your income
  • You don’t have to list the value of any of your assets or property (Home, farmland, or cars)

There is usually a charge for late enrollment if you did not enroll in part D when you first became eligible and if you do not have any creditable drug coverage. But if you qualify for Extra Help all penalties will be waived off.

After fully registering and qualifying for Extra Help, you do not need to reapply each year as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements. However, you may need to complete a review of your eligibility form. You may need to reapply if circumstances change for example if you lose Medicaid eligibility or your income increases.
