Understanding Extra Help Medicare

Who is eligible for Medicare Extra Help?

As great as this program is, not everyone is eligible for it. You can get Medicare Extra Help if you are enrolled in Original Medicare and meet the income requirement. Here are some important requirements to qualify for Extra Help:

  • You must be a resident of the United States and enrolled or eligible for a Part D prescription plan
  • You must meet the resource limit. Resource limits refer to bank accounts, real estate, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and cash. This does not include a primary residence. For 2022, the resource limits are
    • Individual: $15,510
    • Married: $30,950
  • You must meet the income limit. This does not include housing assistance, medical treatment, and drugs, tax credit payment, food stamps, home energy assistance, or scholarships. For 2022 the annual income limits are:
    • Individual: $19,320
    • Married: $26,130

You should know that anyone with Medicare who has already qualified for Medicaid, a Medicare Savings Program, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) [5] is already eligible and does not need to apply separately.
