What Is the QI Medicare Savings Program?

How to get help to cover Medicare costs

The primary function of Medicare is to provide healthcare services to people older than 65 years and people with medical conditions. Out-of-pocket costs such as premiums, copayments [1], and deductibles are also involved. You can enroll in certain programs or take several steps if you cannot pay for your part of Medicare costs:

  • Sign up on time and plan: You can be punished if you don’t sign up early. It is important to register for initial coverage early. You can add extra services that you might require to avoid penalties and late fees.
  • Dual eligibility: You are eligible to access both Medicare and Medicaid [2] if you have an important need or disability. This is known as dual eligibility, and it could give you extra health coverage and services.
  • Update your income: Your eligibility is usually based on your income. It would help to tell Medicare if your income reduces.
  • Extra Help: This program provides savings on prescription medication costs, but you have to be under the Medicare Part D [3] prescription plan to qualify. You can access the Extra Help Program if you qualify for a QMB.
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans: You can pay for inpatient and outpatient care with Medicare parts A [4] and B respectively. You can pay for prescription drugs via Medicare Part D. Medicare Part C [5], or Medicare Advantage, which helps you to create a Medicare plan that is perfect for your financial and healthcare needs. You can save money by bundling Medicare services via an Advantage plan.
  • Medicare savings programs: An example of these programs is the QMB, which helps you pay for a part of your Medicare costs [6]. Only people with a certain income limit and medical needs can access this program.
