Puppy Diarrhea: Symptoms, Causes, Prevention and More

Diet Change and Dietary Indiscretion

Dietary indiscretion or a sudden change in diet causes diarrhea in dogs irrespective of its age. Dietary indiscretion is a common veterinary diagnosis, and it simply means your puppy consumed something that she shouldn’t have.  Switching to a different food must be done gradually over several days. Some puppies have allergies to specific foods and ingredients. Eating garbage leftover from the kitchen, ingesting a chewed-up tennis ball or munching on any plants in the garden (amaryllis).

When trying to change a puppy’s diet from puppy to adult food, it can lead to diarrhea, which is completely normal. It takes some days for you puppy’s stomach to get used to the new food and the diarrhea stops.

Consuming an excess amount of fatty meal can result in stomachache. In some cases, the puppy might vomit or feel pains with diarrhea. When a puppy consumes something toxic, the symptoms seen depend on what was eaten. It is important to visit or contact an animal poison helpline immediately after consuming a toxic substance.

Non-toxic meals can cause problems if they get stuck in the puppy’s gastrointestinal tract and obstruct passage of other substances. When this happens, the puppy becomes lethargic, loses appetite and experiences abdominal pains.
