Teplizumab Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes

What is Teplizumab?

Teplizumab functions as an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody drug that attaches to T-cells and reduces the activities of the immune system. Scientists are testing other drugs that function like this for the treatment of other diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The drug is usually administered via injections within 2 weeks in an outpatient setting.

According to studies, Teplizumab can stabilize the immune system of people who experience early onset of type 1 diabetes. The drug enhances the insulin-producing beta cells to continue the production of insulin for a long period. Skin rash [1] is a side effect of the drug.
