Trichomoniasis (Trich): Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, & Treatment

Outlook

Trichomoniasis is a very common STI that goes away with the right treatment. It’s critical that you and your partners take antibiotics as directed and avoid sexual activity until the infection goes away, which should take approximately a week. Although untreated trichomonia increases the risk of contracting or distributing HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, long-term issues from trichomonia are rare.

It is possible to get trich more than once. After receiving therapy for trich, about 1 in 5 patients re-infects within three months. You and your sexual partners should have therapy concurrently to avoid reinfection. You should give yourself a week after therapy to allow the medication to take effect and for symptoms to subside before engaging in sexual activity.
