General Symptoms of Uveitis

The symptoms of uveitis depend on the type. To identify the symptoms of the condition, it is important to understand the types of uveitis. Here are 12 general symptoms of uveitis:

Severe redness in the eye

The most common symptom of uveitis is severe redness of the eye. No matter which part of the eye the condition affects, it is usually characterized by serious redness. According to studies, more than 80% of people with the condition experience redness of the eye. Since redness of the eye can be associated with other eye conditions, it is important to contact your doctor to get a proper diagnosis.

Decreased vision

People with uveitis usually experience decreased visions. It may present itself as cloudy or blurry visions [6], or loss of color vision. Contact your doctor immediately if you start to experience difficulties with seeing objects.

Headaches

The eye is highly connected to the brain via vessels, nerves, sinuses, and other means. Most eye conditions usually result in symptoms in the head, such as headache. Uveitis may present as a headache. You may feel aches relative to where the inflammation occurs in the eye.

Photophobia

Photophobia is a condition that occurs when the eye’s sensitivity to bright light increases to an extent of discomfort. It can also be described as the fear of light. It occurs when the iris expands to allow more light to get to the retina causing discomfort and pain. It is a common symptom of uveitis.

Worsening Floaters

People with uveitis may constantly experience dark floating spots in their vision. This symptom usually accompanies all the types of uveitis. The floaters usually appear as spots in the eye that look like tiny chains or rods of transparent bubbles moving around the field of vision. In most cases, the floaters worsen with time and may cause severe visual problems. It would help to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you start to experience progressive worsening of your uveitis.

Painful eye

This is one of the most common symptoms of uveitis. The severity of the pain usually depends on the location of the inflammation. The least severe pain occurs in anterior uveitis and the most severe pain occurs in pan uveitis.
