Other foods with hidden gluten

Many foods you do not think contain gluten do. Sometimes the amount of gluten they contain is very little or depends on how they are prepared. Some foods you should be more careful about buying when you have celiac disease include [9]:
Meats: Gluten may be found in commercially prepared meat mixtures or meat steeped in ingredients containing gluten.
Meat substitutes: Steering clear of meat might not be enough. Many meat substitutes such as veggie burgers, veggie sausages, seitan, hot dogs, and imitation bacon also contain gluten.
Chips: Flour is sprinkled on many chips before they are fried. The chips may also contain malt vinegar, which is gluten-rich.
Brown rice syrup: Brown rice itself is gluten-free. The syrup, however, often contains gluten because it is usually made from barley malt and other gluten-rich ingredients.
Ice cream and frozen yogurts: Some are mixed with gluten products.
Not all of these foods contain gluten all the time. Always check the ingredients very carefully to make sure those containing gluten have not been snuck in. You should prepare as many as you can by yourself so you are sure there is no gluten in them. If you buy them from commercial dealers, see if there are vendors that cater specifically to people on gluten-free diets you can buy from.
