Is Hair Texture Determined by Genetics

Facts about Hair Types and Texture

Different hair types have their characteristics. Some which makes the favourable and some which do not.

Researchers say that straight hair may have become more common during ice age, thousands of years ago. Reason is that straight hair lays against the skin, which could provide more protection from the cold. Straight hair also appears to be more oily which protects it better during cold.

Another interesting fact is that uncombable hair syndrome [3] is a rare genetic disorder caused by hair genes mutation. It makes the hair very dry, and hard to brush. The hair also grows outward from the scalp, so it sticks out in different directions.

Also, although it’s not very common but hair can naturally become curly or straight later in life. There’s no explanation yet to why these happens but it does happen.

If you are want to know about the connection between your DNA and your hair type you can, you can conduct an AncestryDNA test. [4]

Conclusion

Your genes have great influence on your type of hair. And in most cases determine the type of hair texture you have. There are basically four types of hair texture. You can have a curly hair but a DNA for straight hair, while you can also have a straight hair and a DNA for curly hair. To know your natural hair type, you can undergo an AncestryDNA test.
