Is Mouthwash Bad for You?

Can cause dry mouth

A disease where the salivary gland is unable to produce sufficient saliva to keep the tongue lubricated is called xerostomia (dry mouth). The absence of saliva may cause cavities in the mouth.

A mouth rinse that contains fluoride is usually prescribed to people that experience dry mouth. Research has also shown that oral rinses that contain alcohol can exacerbate the symptoms of dry mouth.

May cause burning or pain when used

Most people enjoy the tingling feeling that a mouth rinse containing alcohol gives. However, in some people, the feeling can feel like a burning pain. Some mouthwashes have over 26 percent alcohol, which makes the tingling sensation stronger.
