Is Mouthwash Bad for You?

Side effects of alcohol-based mouthwash

Alcohol is added to most mouthwashes as a preservative ingredient. It is also used to carry other active components of the alcohol and not as an antiseptic ingredient. It is important to know that these side effects do not occur in everybody and certain components could cause more side effects.

Could lead to canker sores

Most companies use an ingredient known as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in toothpaste and oral rinse to cause foaming effects in the mouth.

People prone to having canker sores are advised to avoid oral rinse that contains SLS because it can lead to an outbreak of sores or exacerbate them. In some cases, people undergoing chemotherapy may also experience outbreaks of canker sores.

People without these reactions or issues may not have this side effect.
