Lucid Dreams: Definition, Techniques, and Benefits

Benefits of lucid dream

Reduces anxiety

There is a sense of control you feel when having lucid dreams, this feeling stays with you and makes you feel empowered. When you know that you are having a dream, you can decide on how the story ends and change its shape entirely. This serves as therapy for people with nightmares; they learn how to control their dreams.

A theory that most people have is that REM sleep is the way the brain uses to organize your life or your day in its own method. Nightmares occur when the brain is trying to arrange things in a detrimental way. The only method to help break that pattern is a treatment called imagery rehearsal therapy [5]. This involves teaching the patient how to incorporate all the five senses and using them to focus on creating a scene they enjoy in their dreams.

Some people have superpowers in their lucid dreams, so when they are attacked by someone, they are able to fight back. People with lucid dreams experience less anxiety [6] than people without.

Improves motor skills

Limited studies suggest that it is possible to be better at basic things like tapping your fingers more quickly via practicing in your lucid dreams. The same portion of the brain becomes active whether you imagine the activities when you are awake or if you run through them in your lucid dreams.
