Procedure for lung needle biopsy

A lung needle biopsy is done by a specialist known as an interventional radiologist with the aid of a CT or other type of scan.
Before the biopsy
The radiologist will first examine your body to ensure you are in the right state for the biopsy. After which they indicate the exact spot where the needle should be placed by drawing on your skin with a marker.
You may have an intravenous line inserted into a vein in one of your arms or hands. This is to deliver a sedative that will make you fall asleep.
Your nurse will put you in the correct position for the procedure. They will clean your skin over the biopsy site with an antiseptic. After which they inject you with an anesthetic to numb the area. This may sting.
