What Are The Benefits of Eating Celery?

It May Be Good for the Nervous System

Research suggests that apigenin in celery can stimulate the growth and development of nerve cells. One study with rodents found that apigenin consumption in rats stimulated nerve cell growth and improved their memory. [7]

Celery also contains coumarin, a compound that studies have shown [8] may help treat [9] neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and epilepsy. This vegetable is also rich in calcium, a mineral that helps trigger the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. [10]

It May Help Regulate Blood Pressure

Celery may help reduce blood pressure. Scientists researching this possibility examined the effects of celery extracts on the blood pressure of two broad groups of rats. One group had normal blood pressure while the other had artificially induced hypertension.

In the study, the hypertensive rats experienced a reduction in blood pressure and an increase in heart rate after consuming the extracts. [11] This effect was not replicated in the group with normal blood pressure.

Celery also contains potassium, a mineral that acts as a vasodilator and can be useful in lowering blood pressure. This vegetable is very low in sodium. Sodium, unlike potassium, is not good for blood pressure.
