What Causes High Bilirubin Levels?

Inflammation of the bile ducts & other causes

The liver, gallbladder, and the duodenum—the entryway to the small intestine—are all connected by bile ducts. They support the transfer of bile, which contains bilirubin, from the liver and gallbladder to the intestines.

Bile cannot drain effectively if these ducts are irritated or clogged. A higher amount of bilirubin may result from this.

Bile duct irritation may cause the following symptoms, jaundice, itching, pale stools, dark urine

Fever, nausea, and vomiting without apparent cause.

Other causes include

  • Hemolytic anemia [5]
  • Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy [6]
