Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease

Some experts believe that this condition occurs because of problems with the way your body utilises a particular protein called alpha-synuclein. Proteins are chemical molecules that have an extremely specific shape. However, some proteins do not have the normal and correct shape. This is because a problem known as protein misfolding has occurred. The human body cannot use these proteins to carry out their functions. Also, they cannot be broken down.
Since these proteins cannot be broken down by the body, they have nowhere to go. Hence, they build up in different tissues or in certain cells of the body. This buildup, clumps or tangles of the proteins are called Lewy bodies [6].
Lewy bodies cause toxic effects and cell damage in the body. Although, they are not seen in all cases of Parkinson’s disease.
Protein misfolding is also common in other disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease [7], various forms of amyloidosis and so many more.
