Gilenya Oral: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, and More

Side Effects of Gilenya

There are several side effects that can be associated with Gilenya, which could be either mild or severe. Mild side effects like cough, headache, back pain, or diarrhea [2] may occur, even though they are mild, if they persist you should immediately talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Still, you have nothing to worry about. You should remember that the medication was prescribed because your doctor based on his diagnosis has judged that the benefits are more than the risk or side effects. Many people using this drug do not have serious side effects.

Some serious side effects include:

  • High blood pressure [3]: you should check your blood pressure regularly when you are using the drug and tell your doctor if the results are high.
  • Increase in risk of skin cancer and lymphoma: fingolimod generally has the tendency of increasing your risk of skin cancer and lymphoma. You should immediately see your doctor if you notice any new or changing skin growths/moles, or swollen lymph nodes.
  • Weaken immune system: the medication can weaken your immune system which would increase the risk of infection while you are taking it and for 2 months when you are done. You are at risk of serious infections that can be fatal such as pneumonia, herpes, and bronchitis. Talk to your doctor immediately if you notice any sign of an infection like fever, difficulty breathing, sore throat, or blisters. It is important that you do not start the medication if you already have an infection.
  • Risk of brain infection: the brain can increase your risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) [4]. These mostly occur after treatment has ended. This is a very serious complication and should be treated with urgency. Immediately call your doctor if you experience any symptoms of PML.
  • Liver problem: although this is a rare side effect, it does happen. Tell your doctor right away if you experience symptoms like nausea [5], abdominal pain, yellowing eyes, and dark urine.

You may also have an allergic reaction to the drug. You should get medical help immediately if you notice any symptom of an allergic reaction, including swelling, itching, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing. This is not a complete list of side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately if you notice any other effects.
