Avoid taking this drug if you have an active fungal infection that requires taking oral antifungals. A topical antifungal might not be an issue, but you should always inform your doctor before taking this medication.

Steroid medicines have a risk of weakening your immune system, making you more prone to getting an infection or worsening an infection you already have. Due to this reason, avoid being around people who are sick or people who are carriers of certain infections (such as chicken pox or measles). Also, do not receive a live vaccine while using this drug.

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to it and do not stop using your drug suddenly. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Do not crush or chew a delayed-release tablet, swallow it in whole.

To help your doctor determine if prednisone is suitable for you, inform him/her if you have any of the following;

  • Diarrhea
  • Liver disease (such as cirrhosis)
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Tuberculosis
  • Glaucoma
  • Osteoporosis [5]
  • Depression
  • Muscle disorders such as; myasthenia gravis
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Heart disease thyroid disorder
  • Malaria

This drug can lead to low birth weight or congenital birth defects if this drug is administered during the first trimester. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant while using this medication.

This medication can pass from mother to baby through breast milk and may cause severe damage to the nursing baby. Inform your doctor if you are currently breastfeeding a baby.

Long-term use of steroids may cause bone loss (osteoporosis), especially if you do not get enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet if you smoke if you do not exercise and if you have a family history of osteoporosis.

Growth in children can be affected while using steroids. Tell your doctor if you notice any abnormal growth rate in your child.
