Topiramate Uses, Side Effects & Warnings

Warnings

When this drug is prescribed to you by your doctor, make sure you tell them about your medical history. If you are allergic to this drug or to some components of this drug, make sure you tell your doctor so that an alternative drug can be provided.

There are some conditions that might prevent you from taking the drugs. They include:

  • Kidney Diseases: If you have or have had a kidney disease, Topiramate might not be safe for you. It increases the risk of kidney stones and acidosis [4]. Make sure you tell your doctor about any kidney condition you have so that an alternative treatment can be provided to you.
  • Eye Problems: One of the side effects of Topiramate is to increase the intraocular pressure in the eyes and cause glaucoma [5]. If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma or any other eye defect, you should tell your doctor about it so that the drug won’t worsen your condition. Your doctor might provide an alternative medication.
  • Liver Diseases: If you have had issues with your liver, this drug can help worsen your condition. This can cause a rapid increase in the ammonia levels in your blood. If your liver issue was less severe, your doctor can decide to carry on with the medication but will continually test your blood to know the level of ammonia.
  • Allergy: If you are allergic to Topiramate or any of its substituents, make sure you tell your doctor. Avoid the drug at all cost as it may kill you. Your doctor will provide an alternative medication for you.
