Diagnosing bipolar disorder in adults

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of bipolar disorder immediately visit a healthcare professional. First, a physical exam will be done, then they will discuss your medical history, and ask you some basic questions about the symptoms you are experiencing, family history and any life experiences that may have caused it. If bipolar disorder is indeed suspected by your healthcare professional, they may refer you to a psychiatrist [3] who will conduct more exams and mental health evaluations. Your psychiatrist will ask more detailed questions such as:
- The symptoms you are experiencing
- What do you think about when you are experiencing depression [4] or manic episodes
- How long do your episodes last
- The first time you experienced any of these symptoms
- If you have ever had suicidal thoughts
- If anyone in your family has similar symptoms or has had BPD before
- If you have a history of substance misuse
Your healthcare provider may also request if he can ask your family members about your behavior. Before you can be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have had at least one depression and one maniac episode.
