Causes and Treatment for Burning and Watery Eyes

Chlorine Irritation

If you spend a lot of time in chlorinated swimming pools, you are more susceptible to irritated or red eyes. Pollutants, such as sweat and urine can combine with chlorine to form chloramines, [5] a dangerous chemical. This chemical can also lead to rashes and skin irritation.

If you observe burning or redness in your eyes after coming in contact with chlorine, you can wash your eyes with clean water to reduce redness. You can also use artificial tears or saline to wash the chlorine out of your eyes.

In most cases, symptoms of redness leave after swimming for 30 minutes. Do not swim with contact lenses in your eyes. Wearing goggles will help protect your eyes from any pollutants in the pool.
