Foot Pain – Symptoms and Causes

Bunion

Bunion refers to a bony protrusion. It can affect the first toe or “big finger” (Hallux Valgus), or it can affect the fifth toe or “little finger” (Bunionett). The bunion that affects the first finger (Hallux Valgus) is the most frequent type of bunions. [4]

It is estimated that about 30% of the population has some type of deformity. Bunion affects females mostly due to excessive use of high-heeled shoes as it contributes to a deformation of the finger and, hence, to this problem’s appearance.

Many bunions are asymptomatic. The use of inappropriate footwear (tight shoes, high heels, etc.) is an important risk factor for the problem to worsen. In some cases, in addition to pain, inflammation may occur, swelling of the soft tissues may occur, and the “skin will turn red.” [5]
