The Causes of Swollen Ankles, Feet and Legs

Blood Clots

A blood clot, also known as a thrombosis, can occasionally form in a vein in the arm or leg. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) [3] is the cause of this, and immediate medical intervention is needed.

Blood builds up in the afflicted leg as a result of DVT, which obstructs the flow of blood returning to the heart. The body may occasionally make up for the obstruction by gradually directing blood through smaller nearby veins. These veins enlarge with time and might remove blood from the limb.

The limb may continue to swell if these veins do not enlarge. Post-thrombotic syndrome is the medical term for persistent pain and edema following a DVT. Recommended options for those who have DVT include:

  • putting the injured limb up
  • promoting blood flow by wearing compression stockings
  • using blood thinners or anticoagulants
  • being subjected to a stent treatment, in which a surgeon places a tube in the vein to keep it open
