Therapy for Depression

A good variety of therapy programs are used to treat depression. Cognitive-behavioural therapy [5] is commonly used to improve the mental health of a depressed person. Therapists also recommend enhancing total well-being. It works by evaluating negative thoughts and helping you be more optimistic about everything. It enables you to change erratic thought patterns and behaviours. Your thoughts become stable, and you will be able to process adverse events better after going through this therapy.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy also helps you learn to cope with depression for an extended period. With this therapy, you can observe when you have negative thoughts and react positively. Studies show that people who go through this therapy are less likely to feel depressed again in the future.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy is not the only method of treating depression. Other therapy programs are:

  • Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
  • Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT)
  • Mindfulness
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Compassion focused therapy (CFT)
  • Emotion-focused therapy (EFT)
  • Person-centred therapy (PCT)
  • Interpersonal therapy (IPT)
