5 Common Symptoms of Tetanus(Lockjaw)

Jerking or Staring Seizures

Clostridium tetani, the bacteria which causes this infection, produces certain toxins [8] once it enters into a person’s body. Most of this toxin spreads through the bloodstream and the lymphatic system. These toxins affect several sites of the nervous system, such as the spinal cord, brain, and peripheral endplates. They interfere with the release of neurotransmitters in the nervous system and block several impulses.

The spasms and involuntary muscular contractions normally seen in tetanus patients are usually caused by these toxins. While these are the most common manifestations, tetanus can also cause seizures, depending on what parts of the nervous system it affects.
