Risk factors

Most times, the actual cause of this disease is unknown, but certain factors put you at a greater risk of being diagnosed with this disease. These factors are;

  • High dose of radiation
  • Smoking
  • Exposure to chemicals such as benzene, detergents, pesticides, and ionizing radiation.
  • Family history, either immediate or distant relatives
  • Genetic syndromes such as trisomy 8 [2], down syndrome, etc.

Symptoms

There is a broad list of possible symptoms of the disease. Some people may or may not show these symptoms until a later stage. It usually begins with flu-like symptoms. Examples of possible symptoms include;

  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Headaches
  • Swollen gum
  • Swollen spleen
  • Loss of appetite
  • Red spots of the skin (Petechiae) [3]
