How Many Calories Will I Burn Sitting vs Standing?

How Do You Calculate the Amount of Calories You Burn a Day?

The Harris Benedict equation is a popular method that helps determine how many calories you burn per day. The equation involves your activity level, age, activity, weight, and height.

According to the Compendium of Physical Activities, you can use a figure representing the metabolic equivalent (MET) for activities you engage in to calculate the amount of calories you burn per day. For instance, the MET for sitting throughout a day is 1.5. The MET for using a treadmill or walking is 2.3.

The Harris Benedict Equation involves multiplying your age, weight, and height by a MET.  A 1.2 MET for sitting or 2 for standing can be used to calculate how many calories you burn in a day.
