10 High-Sodium Foods to Avoid

Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese contains high levels of calcium [5] and protein [6], but its salt level is relatively high. A half-cup or 113-gram serving of cottage cheese contains 350 mg of sodium, or 15% of the RDI. Salt in cottage cheese helps boost flavor, adds texture and acts as preservative. However, one study discovered that rinsing cottage cheese under running water for 3 minutes, then draining it, reduces sodium content by 63%.

Vegetable Juice

Drinking vegetable juice regularly offers numerous health benefits. However, some branded vegetable juices usually contain high levels of sodium. Studies show that an 8-ounce (240-ml) serving of vegetable juice contains about 405 mb of sodium, or 17% of the RDI. Some brands offer low-sodium varieties which may contain about 140 mg of sodium per serving.
